Device Icon Naming Thu, 01 Mar 2007 16:59:16 -0500

A couple days ago, I had started a list of device names that we can start to standardize on for device-specific icon names. I've also been working on an update in the Icon Naming Specification to list a few more base device names (such as scanner and phone), to clarify how these device icons should be named. Today, David Z. happened to hop into the Tango IRC channel, and I pointed him to the file. He tells me that he plans to get support into HAL and gnome-vfs soon for an info.icon property to specify the icon name to use for a device, via its FDI files. Hopefully, that will be done soon, and we can have really nice device icons in all of GNOME.

This is really good, because my phone, is not a hard drive, or media player. It's a phone. And out of all the phones out there, it's a specific model of phone. So having a sexy tango icon of my phone on my desktop when I connect it, will be awesome. We'll be able to support a lot more devices than just the iPods. Some of the Tango artists are quite eager to draw device icons. And now that we're moving along nicely elsewhere in the desktop, and can get the Device Names Addendum going, we'll be able to get some of those icons drawn up soon.

If there are icons not in the list, that you think should be, please mail me the manufacturer and model information for the devices. I will soon be sending mail to the XDG list at FreeDesktop about this as well, so feel free to reply to that thread when I start it. Enjoy.
