Well, after yesterday's blog about device names, Richard Hughsie very quickly responded with a patch to the HAL list, to add the property to the specification. I also received a couple of icons from Jakub, for the Macbook devices. They are quite nice:

Today, I did a little more research into the problem, and made a couple of quick patches which add support for the property, to gnome-vfs, and gnome-volume-manager. The gnome-vfs patch means that devices get proper icons on the desktop, in the Computer view in Nautilus, and in the File Chooser dialog. The latter patch means that if you have low disk space on one of the storage devices, the notification pops up with an appropriate icon if one is available. I put Andreas Nilsson's N800 icons to good use today:
